I’ve been struggling a lot with fear lately and feeling frightened, so initially this blog post was going to be all about fear and how to defeat it, how to face it head on, and how to use crystals to help; particularly as there seems to be so much of it in the world at the moment. I often hear people say “we live in a fear based culture” and wonder what that really means; can a whole culture be based on fear or is that just the perception of a fearful person? Is fear really always a bad thing anyway? When I am frightened about doing something it is usually the thing I most need to do, and when I push through my fear I usually find great rewards on the other side of it. This led me to think about how to live in a world full of fear, not how to defeat it and for that we need courage!

Courage is about making friends with fear, holding its hand as it walks alongside us in life. Courage is an ally to help us to do the things in our lives that we want to do even though they frighten us. Courage tells us to fight for what we believe in and what we feel is right even when many other people share the opposite view, and even when we are outnumbered and fearful of the consequences of speaking up.

One of my favourite childhood books was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It taught me about some of the crazy things people do when they are filled with fear but lack the courage to face it! Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the book, said “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It’s knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” To do what needs to be done even though we are scared is where the most spiritual growth is found, and whilst I believe fear can lower our vibration, courage can raise it up again. Here are some of my favourite crystals to use when I need some help with courage:

Red Muscovite: a great one to use when you feel like you have lost your way and are overwhelmed by the challenges in your life. I also associate this one with Archangel Uriel, the Archangel of Peace, who helps me find peace within.

Bloodstone: an energising and strengthening stone that helps you find the calm in the chaos of life and to keep moving forwards.

Carnelian: one of my favourite crystals – my carnelian pebble travels with me to most places. It calms the negative emotions that can come from fear – anger, resentment, jealousy and so on.

Fire Agate: as its name suggests it is full of fire energy that can charge you up, burn through anything that is holding you back on your path and propel you forward. A very powerful stone in my view.

Mookaite: this is a type of Jasper that I find really grounding. A great one to use when your mind is running away with itself and your fears and worries, and you need to come back to your centre and get still!

These are just some of the crystals that I use when I need a little help summoning up the courage I need to make friends with my fear, but as always with crystals trust your intuition when selecting one to work with for yourself. And next time you feel like you don’t have the courage to hold hands with your fears think about the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz who spent all that time looking for courage outside of himself only to learn that he had lots of it already, if he had only looked inside himself. Blessings, Paul.
